Can you run a welder (Lincoln sp-175t) on dryer NEMA 10-30R receptacle?
My welder (Lincoln sp-175t) has a rated input of 20A at 230V, so the dryer outlet should be able to handle this. The dryer receptacle is a NEMA 10-30R (3-prong 125/250V 30A), which has two hots and a neutral. This is standard for older dryers. I read that the neutral return can be used as a ground for the welder because the neutral is connected to ground at the panel (I will verify this). On newer 4-prong hookups the extra ground has been added by code for keeping the ground and neutral separate on devices for safety, so there is a non-current bearing reference.
Does this sound correct so that I will be able to operate my welder off the dryer outlet?
The plug on the welder is not a NEMA 10-30P, so this is why I was asking because it will need to be changed, but I think that it will work fine.
The two "hots" as you phrase it are ,phase and neutral.. Yes neutral is grounded at the switch board. Yes the earth is run separately.. Yes all of what you say is correct. Yes you can use your Lincoln Welder using the existing power supply. 20 amps is fine to draw from a 30 amp rated supply.
