When they say double pole motor, what do they mean?
I often hear the term 'single pole' or 'double pole' in reference to motors and other types of electrical equipment, and I don't know exactly what that means.
On the Wikipedia, I see that a 'pole' is a single set of contacts that belongs to a circuit. How does that apply to motors?
in the case of motors, pole refers to the poles of the magnets that surround the armature. you need at least one north pole and one south pole to make a motor work.
now i dont know where "single pole" came from, but poles occur in even numbers: 2,4,6 etc.
the more poles, the better.
