What gauge wire would I use to run it 500ft from power source?

I need to know what gauge wire would I need to run a wire 500 feet from the main power source (outdoor) on a farm? I would need it to run common items such as wood working equiptment, etc. Any ideas???

I would run 6 gauge to its own sub panel. Anything smaller would over heat and lose power over that distance.
