how does a power inverter work in my vehicle?

I want to install a power inverter in my car i know it hooks up directly to my battery. Here are my questions, 1) how many amps will it draw if im using 1500 watts, about 15 minutes per hour of drive time? 2) will i need to upgrade my alternator? 3) will the life of my battery be shortened? 4)should the car be running or just on the on position for the first 15 minutes prior to starting? Thank you guys and gals for your help!

I run one in my Motor Home with two Deep Cycle batteries. It will give about an hour and a half running a TV, satellite receiver and sound system. Those batteries have a lot more capacity than your car battery. Run it for 15 minutes without the engine running, with any appreciable load, and you may just have to walk home. At full load it'll draw 15 amps or better from your battery.
