what did the french and danes have in common in WWII that led them to help the jews?
Actually, I think the French record in WW-2 towards the Jews was problematic. Not anywhere near as bad as the Ukrainians or Poles but not anywhere near as good as the Dutch and certainly not up to the level of the Danes.
I think there were several factors among the people who helped Jews during WW-2.
--some had ties (in-laws or family) who were jewish.
--some viewed this as simply "resistance against the Nazi's" so anything they did to spite the Germans (helping a jew, hiding a former member of the govt., putting out a newsletter denouncing the new laws.
--some saw something to gain personally from this.
But in the case of the Dutch and especially the Danes, these were both societies that were relatively egalitarian, they did not look up to the Germans and tended to see the jews of their country as Dutch or Danish (rather than a jew who carried a dutch passport).
