Why does a low wattage PSU promote crashing in high grade Graphics Cards?
I was reading the Tech Forum because my 8800GT keeps lighting up the pixels in a rainbow color and freezes my computer.. (during gameplay) someone else had a problem like might.. i spent 60$ fixing my Graphics' Cards heat problem and the problem persists. before i spend more money on a PowerSupply.. does a low wattage PSU promote crashing in high grade Graphics Cards?
If the PSU doesn't supply enough wattage for all the components, then the system fails. Low wattage will cause processors to make errors. Sensors on the motherboard can detect low wattage, and will shut down the system to prevent damage to stored files and programs.
The best way to select a PSU is to figure out what hardware you have, calculating how much total wattage is needed, and select a PSU that exceeds your needs. There are online calculators that can give good ballpark guesses.
Many video card manufacturers recommend a certain wattage for individual cards, assuming that you have a popular configuration with a known wattage need.
A common problem for PSUs is that they might advertise a certain *maximum* output, but their *continuous* output is nowhere near that maximum. You should stay away from cheapo off-brands, and look for recommendations on sites like Overclockers.net. You don't have to get the "latest and greatest"—just figure out which brands are popular, and find an offering that's in your range, as this will be more dependable than some no-name brand.
