Green power does not contribute to the greenhouse gases in the environment. Solar, wind, thermal, nuclear and water all fall into that category. Only coal, gas and oil fired plants generate greenhouse gases which gives them a carbon footprint. There is a problem with water and nuclear though. Each of these two damages the environment but in a different manner than by adding greenhouse gases and carbon. Nuclear power has a thermal footprint just like a coal, gas or oil fired plant. Power plants using heat to boil water need large amounts of cooling water to work efficiently. The added heat in waterways damages the living environment affecting wildlife in the area. Increase the temperature of a bay or river by a few degrees and fish and other sea life tend to die. Thermal pollution is as bad as any other and we still have the radioactive waste problem that is not yet solved. Water dams rivers and waterways and affects wildlife by blocking migration paths because of the long body of water behind the dam and limiting travel by fish in rivers, mostly salmon returning to spawn. The Columbia River in Oregon and Washington is the worst case of salmon loss ever.
