Installing a Tachometer?
I have an Auto Meter Tach,
How exactly do you get to the wires that you need to connect the tach to. Do you drill through the dash, go around, what? also, how would you lengthen the wires so that they can reach their destinatination. Basicly, how do you install it?

This is an easy question with a big answer.
I have installed many tachometers and it varies from car to car but here are the general instructions!
1) mounting; decide where you want the tach to be mounted. Usually near the driver so he does not have to take his eyes off the road too much to see the tachometer reading. Try not to obscure your vision of the road or other important guages.
2) Power and ground: locate the fuse box and find a wire that will support the extra amperage and attach to the side that runs OFF THE FUSE.That way if there is aproblem; the fuse will blow. The ground can be put almost anywhere as long as it is a Good Ground.
3)signal wire: here is where it can get complicated. most tachometers are hooked to the negative side of the ignition coil.Some Cars use Ignitors and some have to be hooked into the computer.For this you will need to run the wires to the engine compartment more than likely.I have a special tool for this that alows me to pierce a plastic gromment on firewall and run wires through. You could cut the gromment a little and push a Mcdonald's straw through and then push wires through straw! ( i hope that isn't confusing ) To lengthen the wires just go to Radio Shack or Fry's to get extra wire and either "butt connect" or Solder wires together for extra length.
4) lighting; the last thing to do is illuminate the tachometer. Find any Light that turns on with Headlight Switch for illumination and tap into the power side for you tachometer's lighting.There may be a seperate ground wire for illumination also.
